Dreaming of a bigger and lighter kitchen

There is no mistaking that our kitchen is probably the darkest room in our house, and I often dream of a lighter and bigger space. But this would obviously mean moving house, a bigger mortgage, and no doubt a whole heap of stress. We have been in our home for nearly 17 years and have no plans to move, so what can we do to achieve a bigger and lighter kitchen.

Paint the units

I was seriously looking into this a few months ago. Whilst our kitchen is a decent quality, I am bored of the beech units and black granite work tops. I think the kitchen would look instantly brighter with the units painted white, and of course some new door handles to give it that fresh new look.

Replace the flooring

I don’t know what I was thinking when we did our kitchen 10 years ago, but we chose black work tops AND black tiled floor. Whilst I do love our kitchen floor, it’s probably not the best colour to go for in the darkest room in the house. Changing the floor to something lighter would certainly brighten up the room.

Small extension to include roof windows

Obviously this would not be a cheap option, but a small extension would really benefit our kitchen. To maximise the light coming in, I would choose to have Solstro dome shaped flat roof windows fitted.

A lick of paint

Our kitchen was painted about 10 years ago, and it is definitely time for a spruce up (I can already hear my husband jumping for joy at these words). A fairly cheap way to brighten up the kitchen.

Add bright and colourful accessories

Is it wrong that I often think of this Orla Kiely bin. My bigger, brighter kitchen would definitely be filled with colourful accessories. I just wont tell the husband how much the bin costs.

So maybe my dream of a bigger and brighter kitchen can finally come true one day. And all without the stress of moving which will no doubt make my husband very happy.

  1. We used to have a galley kitchen like yours and we painted the doors cream with a wooden worktop and light floor and it gave it such a new lease of life I loved it, I seem to be thinking about kitchens loads at the moments with having the house up for sale and next time I want a light bright kitchen because ours is black gloss which is so dark at time x

    • I have really been considering this Sarah and would probably go for white with having the black worktops and floor. I think it would transform the kitchen (I just need to twist Hywel’s arm now lol) x
