How to spend your day in London

London is a brilliant city to visit, and it’s full of things to do for the whole family. There’s an endless list of museums, parks and other tourist attractions to entertain the family, and you’ll never be lost for something to do. Amazingly, viewing numbers at London attractions are climbing, despite their being fewer overseas visitors. Everyone is welcome, and there’s so much to experience.

With so much potential on offer, what should your family do with a day in London? Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction.

Covent Garden

The Covent Garden area is awash with things to do. You have theatres with some of the best performing talent in the world, lavish restaurants with outdoor seating and some of the best shops in the UK. For example, there’s a Forbidden Planet store to be found here, filled to the rafters with toys, games and much more.

Covent Garden is also very conveniently located, as it’s a short walk from Euston Station. You have Trafalgar Square nearby, and also Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. It’s the core of Central London, so think of Covent Garden as a good base when exploring the capital.

Thames River Cruises

When you’re in London, it can be tempting to travel exclusively by foot, cab or tube. They’re all valid choices of course, but why not add some spontaneity to your trips, and travel by boat? The Thames is there for a reason, and travelling up and down it lends a whole new perspective to the capital, even if you’ve visited dozens of times before.

You can also enjoy some dinner service and leisure time aboard the lavish Thames river cruises, which drift up and down the river offering refreshments for a truly relaxing afternoon. They’re also a great setting for special occasions like birthdays and engagement parties, so if you are celebrating a special occasion, clamber aboard. To cap it all off, there’s even live entertainment on some cruises too.

Leicester Square

No visit to London is complete without stopping by Leicester Square. At this spot you’ll experience what some consider to be the heart of London’s entertainment scene. After all, it’s where most of the British movie premiere’s take place. If it’s good enough for movie stars, it’s good enough for you and your family.

You can also buy last minute theatre tickets here if you’re desperate to catch a West End show. Other than that you have top tier restaurants, cinemas and casinos to entertain you, as well as a bevy of street performers who frequently base their talents here.

London Eye

Sometimes, the best choices are the most obvious ones. The London Eye is one of London’s top attractions, boasting sweeping views over great swathes of the city. It’s a leisurely trip on the famous wheel, and you’ll have plenty of time to pose for pictures on high. There’s no rushing around or safety concerns, just a peaceful ascension before landing back down on British soil.

The London Eye is also great because you and your family can chat during the whole ride. There’ll be lots of ‘look at that’ moments while you’re experiencing the attraction, meaning you can share some truly fabulous views together and share in the excitement.

  1. London is absolutely fantastic – there is so much to see, do, experience and just take in! I lived there for 5 yerars and it wasn’t until about 2 months before I moved back up North that I do the whole ‘touristy thing’, Downing Street was totally underwhelming – my fave place is Covent Garden though – so eclectic and great for people watching! 🙂 Sim x

    • I can imagine you do all the touristy things when you don’t live there, and we have always had great times in London when we have visited. It makes me want to go again and explore more of this great city x
