Christmas Markets you need to visit

*Collaborative post*

One of the greatest joys of the festive period is the opportunity to go and visit a Christmas market or two. Just about every major city in the UK offers a market of this kind, and many are entirely unique. If you’re looking to get into the festive spirit, then there are few better places to do it.

What are the Christmas Markets?

You might have heard your local Christmas market described as a ‘German’ market. While the tradition undoubtedly spread in Germany, it’s more likely to have originated in Austria, with the ‘Krippenmarkt’ opening in 1298 in Vienna, under Emperor Albrecht.

This tradition evolved over the coming centuries into the Striezelmarkt, in the city of Dresden, in 1424. This was a major step forward for the tradition, and saw the widespread sale of grilled meats, cakes, and breads. These things remain a staple of the tradition today, and partly explain why it’s so popular with families and children.

Go to a Christmas market today, and you can expect great food and drink, as well as music and other forms of entertainment.

Best Christmas Markets in the UK

So, which Christmas markets are best in the UK?

For sheer size, it’s difficult to beat the Frankfurt Market, which is held every year in Victoria Square in Birmingham. It’s characterized by authentic bratwurst and gluhwein, and it’s the biggest outside of Germany and Austria.

Then there’s St. Nicholas Fair in York, which is smaller, but no less charming. Expect gingerbread men, miniature golf courses, and a string of charming little huts. Finally, there’s the Glasgow market, held annually in St Enoch Square and George Square. It’s packed with authentic food, drink and entertainment.

If you’re planning on travelling a long distance for a Christmas market this winter, then you’ll need to make sure that your vehicle is fit for the job. You can buy tyres online and get them fitted locally, which is often the most cost-effective option.

Best Christmas Markets in Europe

If you’re willing to travel to mainland Europe, then you’ll naturally be able to enjoy a different kind of Christmas market. The most obvious destination here is Germany. Cologne hosts several Christmas markets, with an entire village (Nikolausdorf) aimed at small children. There, you’ll learn the real story of St. Nicholas.

Then, in Austria, there’s the Salzburg market, where you’ll be able to hear a stirring rendition of Silent Night, just a few yards from where it was first written and performed.

If you’re in France, then Strasbourg (which is known as the country’s ‘Capital of Christmas’) is the best bet. This is largely thanks to the local producers in Alsace, which provide strings of amazing sausages and sweet treats.
