A great ski holiday involves a range of different elements coming together. But among the most important of these is the resort itself. If you visit the right resort – one that’s suited to your level of experience, your budget, and your preferences when it comes to apres-ski – you’re almost guaranteed to have a good time.
Fortunately, there are a number of fantastic resorts to choose from in Europe – but not all of them command the same level of fame and prestige. Let’s take a look at a few of the best of the lesser-known ones.

Tignes, France: The High-Altitude Guarantee
Tignes isn’t exactly an obscure resort – but it’s worth mentioning here thanks to its stunningly reliable snow. When other resorts are struggling to accommodate hordes of skiers on less-than-stellar snow, ski holidays in France offer high altitude, a long season, and the impressive Grand Motte glacier, which is skiable right through until May. It’s quite difficult, in other words, to go wrong.
Jasná Nízke Tatry, Slovakia: The Value Gem
Slovakia is a part of the world that appeals, increasingly, to budget-conscious skiers. This particular resort offers excellent infrastructure, including modern gondolas, at a price that’s hugely competitive. You’ll get access to the second-highest mountain in the Low Tatras range, in the form of Chopok – and you’ll get an authentic, family-friendly apres-ski experience, and a lively nightlife, too.

Grimentz-Zinal, Switzerland: The Authentic Charm
When many of us think of a traditional alpine village, what might immediately spring to mind is a cluster of traditional wooden dwellings, exemplified by this gorgeous little resort.
For those looking to avoid the crowds, and to experience true freeride skiing, this might be the best place on earth. The crowds are thin because the piste is quite limited, but the mountain beyond the runs themselves is expansive. In other words, you’ll have no shortage of quality snow to explore, provided that you have the skill necessary to navigate it safely.

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, France: The Unspoiled Neighbour
If you want a French alternative to the huge, popular three-valley resorts, then Sainte-Foy is worth considering. Locals love it thanks to its off-piste areas, and its abundant tree-skiing. You’ll be able to experience skiing in its purest form, free from the commercialisation that’s blighted many of its nearest neighbours.
Of course, if you’re thinking of heading to a resort like this, it’s worth taking stock of what you’ll be missing out on. When you don’t have the facilities available in larger resorts, you’ll be more reliant on your own wits, and your skill as a skier. In other words, resorts like this one are a great match for experts, but not for beginners.
