If you love walking and are looking for inspiration for your next big adventure, these must-visit destinations are perfect for exploring on foot.
The Great Wall of China
One of the largest construction projects in the history of the world, The Great Wall of China is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is widely considered one of the seven wonders of the world.
Construction of the wall spanned three centuries, and its total length reached over 13,000 miles! But, while you may not be able to walk the entire length of the wall during your trip, there are specific sections of the wall that are perfect for exploring on foot.
The Zhengbeilou-Mutianyu hike, for example, covers approximately 12 km (or 7.5 miles) of the wall, and a day of exploring that offers spectacular views, and a less crowded experience than many other tourist hotspots. There’s also the option of multi-day treks along the wall, with camping under the stars, for a truly unforgettable experience.
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru
Another of the seven wonders, Machu Picchu is the perfect example of a journey that’s best made on foot to truly appreciate the incredible diversity of the Andean landscapes, and spectacular ruins you’ll encounter along the trail.
The Inca Trail is part of an extensive network of roads spanning 30,000 kilometres, and several South American countries, but most visitors come to hike the most famous section that leads to Machu Picchu, the awe-inspiring Inca citadel perched high in the Andean mountains.
The classic route to the citadel is considered a moderately challenging route, and is typically hiked across four days. Fortunately, there are several established campsites en route to Machu Picchu, allowing you to experience nights under the stars in the Andes, and appreciate the wonder of the place as you make this magical pilgrimage.
Everest Base Camp in Nepal
Mount Everest is the world’s highest peak and, as such, is considered the ultimate challenge for many climbers. However, even those who don’t fancy scaling to the summit can experience the awe-inspiring allure of this mountain with a trek to Everest Base Camp.
Challenging but rewarding, Everest Base Camp treks offer an unforgettable journey through the Himalayas and are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Not only will you be at the base of the world’s highest peak, but you’ll also be filled with the sense of wonder that comes from being surrounded by the world’s highest mountains, as Everest Base Camp offers a panoramic view of other iconic peaks in the region, such as Changtse, Pumori, Nuptse, and Lhotse.
Deciding to join an Everest Base Camp trek isn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision! You’ll need to commit to the experience with a comprehensive program of training and preparation before your trip, including acclimatisation to high altitudes. But for those who’ve made the journey, every step is worth it for the breathtaking views and incredible sense of accomplishment.
Cinque Terre in Italy
For a more leisurely experience, why not explore the picturesque villages and vibrant colours of the Italian Riviera, with a walking holiday to Cinque Terre in Italy. Here, the extensive network of walking trails between the villages offers stunning views and a chance to experience local life.
While it’s possible to hike the main trail—the Sentiero Azzurro—in around six hours, it’s far more enjoyable to spread the trek across several days, allowing you to stop off and enjoy the five different towns and villages you’ll pass through. Not only will this gentle pace make it ideal for less seasoned hikers, but it will also give you more time to savour the delectable local cuisine and wines.
Landmannalaugar in Iceland
Located in the heart of Iceland’s southern Highlands, Landmannalaugar is a vast area of stunning natural beauty and a popular destination for hikers from across the globe.
Perhaps best known for its rainbow-coloured rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs, there are also lava fields and obsidian caves to explore along the way.
Landmannalaugar marks the northern end of one of the country’s most popular hiking trails, Laugavegur, and is home to many other trails, with options for single or multi-day treks, so there’s something to suit every adventurer.
