3 Fantastic Yorkshire Staycation Spots

*Post written by David Henderson*

For many of us, our overseas holiday plans in 2020 have sadly had to be cancelled or postponed.

So (subject to government guidance) many of us are focusing our plans for the rest of the year on getaways in good old Great Britain, and a quick glance at a map is a reminder that we’re really spoilt for choice right here at home.

However, choose we must, so in this post I’m singing the praises of an eclectic English county blessed by lush undulating countryside, charming villages, bustling towns, dynamic cities and locals offering legendary hospitality.

I’m waxing lyrical about Yorkshire of course  ̶  here are its three most fantastic staycation spots.

Yorkshire Staycation

Home to a famous football club that’s currently undergoing an amazing renaissance, Leeds also boasts an award-winning national theatre, dynamic dance companies, a cool cuisine scene and retail that ranges from Victorian arcades to chic contemporary boutiques. If you want to shop ‘til you drop, head to Leeds Corn Exchange for creative and crafty independent stores. There’s also a thriving craft beer scene for fans of local brews and imported blends, supported by cracking bars like the Water Lane Boathouse, Tapped and Whitelock’s Ale House.

Tip: enjoy a beer at Leeds Postal Service bar, an old sorting office that always delivers good times!

History is packed into every nook and cranny in York. Founded as a fortress by the Romans in AD 71, this cathedral city was the British seat of emperors Hadrian and Septimus, while Constantine the Great was declared emperor here in 306 AD. The Gothic splendour of York Minster is awe-inspiring, the city walls stand testament to 2000 years of history. You can step back in time as you stroll along the cobbles of the Medieval shopping street, the Shambles, and experience an amazing recreation of Viking life at the Jorvik Centre. York is fab for foodies too  ̶  refresh yourself with French fare at Rustique or delicious curries at Mumbai Lounge.

Tip: hire a car in York with Enjoy and roll around the ravishing Yorkshire countryside.

Known worldwide as the steel city due to its industrial powerhouse past, Sheffield is home to two terrific football teams (Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United) and it now hosts award-winning pubs and restaurants, as well as a thriving creative scene  ̶  it’s a musical hotspot, spawning bands like Def Leppard, The Human League, Pulp and Arctic Monkeys. Meanwhile, the Antiques Quarter is a lovely place to hang out and enjoy delicious drinks and snacks as well as picking up bric-a-brac bargains, and Endcliffe Park and Concord Park are gorgeous green spaces.

Tip: check out Sheffield Culture Hub for the latest arty news in this inventive city.

These Yorkshire staycation hubs deserve their hard-earned places in my hat-trick, but there’s so much more to discover in this diverse county when you get there.

Hit the road and head for the moors and dales  ̶  you’ll never look back!
